Rokia Koné

Rokia Koné's voice rises pure, clear, and vibrant—suspended between deep basslines, enveloping synthesizers, traditional percussion, and infectious Mande guitar grooves. It's a voice that captivates, that takes your breath away—instantly recognizable to anyone in Mali and across West Africa.
One of Mali’s most beloved and dynamic artists, Koné is a true force of nature.
Her performances in Bamako's maquis clubs become timeless sonic journeys, often lasting for hours, as her voice flows through a kaleidoscope of emotions: from joy to despair, from rage to tenderness—always with extraordinary grace and power.
Her musical journey began in childhood, in the courtyard of her home in Dioro, near Ségou, cradle of the great Bamana Empire. There, as a young girl, she sang her grandmother’s songs, growing up in an environment where music was a family legacy, passed down by aunts and uncles—all singers.
After moving to Bamako, Rokia became a backing vocalist for Alia Coulibaly, one of Mali’s brightest stars, and soon made a name for herself as a solo artist.
In 2016, she joined the feminist supergroup Les Amazones d’Afrique, which opened the doors to the international stage.
Her debut album BAMANAN was released in 2022—a collaboration with Irish rock producer Jacknife Lee (U2, R.E.M, Snow Patrol, The Killers).
The album is a tribute to the Bambara people of southern Mali—their language, culture, and traditions—and is rooted in the legacy of the hereditary griots, the celebratory singers and guardians of collective memory.
